Michigan Fire Hydrant Water Unexpectedly Flows

April 20, 2012

A construction truck broke a fire hydrant in Grand Rapids, Mich., causing water to gush for several minutes.

Grand Rapids public works employees eventually were able to shut down the hydrant Wednesday, but water flowed down the street for some time.

The Grand Rapids Press reports city officials plan to inspect whether the water caused erosion underneath the street.

The accident was caused by a large truck hauling drywall that cut a corner too close and hit the hydrant.

Assistant water system manager Wayne Jernberg says the vehicle impact broke the line between the hydrant and the hydrant valve.
