2 Killed, 5 Injured in Indiana Apartment Fire
Authorities say a 14-year-old girl and a 33-year-old woman died and five others, including a firefighter, were injured in a Gary, Ind., apartment fire.
Gary Fire Battalion Chief Dino Travlino tells The Times of Munster firefighters responded about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and saw heavy smoke coming from a two-story brick apartment building.
Travlino says four people trapped on the second floor were rescued and taken to area hospitals. Two others were pulled from a rear apartment and pronounced dead.
The Lake County coroner’s office identified the dead as 14-year-old Angel Harris and 33-year-old Bernice King. The causes of death are under investigation.
A Gary firefighter was injured when he fell through a floor. Travlino says the firefighter’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
