Chicago May Settle Suits Against Police for $32M

January 17, 2013

A Chicago City Council committee is scheduled to consider proposals that would settle a pair of lawsuits against police for more than $32 million.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that a $22.5 million payment to a California woman would be one of the largest in city history. Police arrested Christina Eilman in 2006 and held her overnight before releasing her into a high-crime area of Chicago. Eilman was abducted, sexually assaulted and fell from a public housing building leaving her severely injured.

The city also is to consider a $10.25 million payment to Alton Logan, who spent 26 years in prison for a murder he didn’t commit in a case involving former police Lt. John Burge.
