Part of Michigan Settlement Over Sidewalk to Pay Off Taxes
Part of Saginaw’s $7,500 lawsuit settlement with a woman who said she was hurt due to a poorly maintained sidewalk will be used to pay her delinquent property taxes.
Saginaw City Council this week approved settlement agreement with Shirley Rice.
The 64-year-old tells The Saginaw News she’ll use part of the money to pay off her 2012 tax bill. The Saginaw County Treasurer’s office says Rice owes about $400. After paying her lawyer, she estimates she’ll have about $3,800 of the settlement.
Rice sued in Saginaw County Circuit Court, saying she was injured after tripping and falling on cracks in the sidewalk twice in 2010.
Rice has filed several complaints in the past, saying weeds and other forms of blight are being ignored in Saginaw’s neighborhoods.
