Long Probe Expected of Indianapolis Warehouse Fire

June 21, 2013

Investigators have started working at an Indianapolis, Ind., recycling facility to determine what sparked the weekend fire that sent a huge tower of black smoke over the city and burned for days.

Indianapolis fire Capt. Rita Burris says local and federal investigators could need a week or more to search the three square blocks of damage on the city’s west side from the fire that started Saturday. Those crews will need to sift through the rubble of burnt tires, wooden pallets and other materials inside the collapsed warehouse.

Burris says investigators will be wearing protective clothing and respirators because of asbestos and other materials in the building.

Burris said Wednesday that a fire crew remained at the scene to watch for hot spots and water down debris being removed.
