Water Line Insurance Considered in Sioux City
The City Council in Sioux City, Iowa, has discussed setting up an insurance fund to cover the costs of water service repairs.
The Sioux City Journal says dozens of homeowners have had to pay hundreds or even thousands of dollars to thaw out or replace frozen pipes this winter. The service lines run from city mains to structures.
An insurance fund likely would require a small increase in monthly utility bills.
The council has asked staffers to prepare a cost comparison of the city providing the service versus contracting out the services. Another option might be contract through an insurance company.
The council took no votes but is expected to return to the issue at its March 17 meeting.
