Freezing Conditions Lead to Ohio Water Main Rupture, Sinkhole
A water main break sparked by cold temperatures in southwest Ohio caused a sinkhole that engulfed the front end of a pickup truck.
WHIO-TV and the Dayton Daily News report the water main break occurred in Dayton early Tuesday and created a sinkhole in the road that swallowed Mike McDonald’s truck around 6:30 a.m. McDonald says he was able to climb out of his vehicle on the passenger side and wasn’t injured.
Water in the area was shut off while repairs were made, but was restored later Tuesday morning.
A city water official says the cold temperatures in the area caused the ground to move and the water main to split. Temperatures around Ohio were in the teens Tuesday, with wind chills below zero in some areas.
