NAIC Now Accepting Applications for 2014 Consumer Liaison Representatives

August 27, 2013

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is currently accepting applications for the 2014 Consumer Liaison Program.

Established in 1992, the Consumer Liaison Program promotes consumer representation and interaction with NAIC members by providing a way for individuals who are qualified consumer representatives of consumer organizations to participate in NAIC meetings. The NAIC defines a consumer organization as a national, state, or local organization that serves to protect the interests of consumers as they relate to the regulation of insurance.

“Consumer liaison representatives provide an extraordinary range of experience and expertise with insurance-related matters,” said Jim Donelon, NAIC president and Louisiana insurance commissioner. “Their perspectives and participation are invaluable, and we encourage applications from those interested in playing a vital role in the NAIC’s consumer education and protection mission.”

One option for individuals to participate in the Consumer Liaison Program is for the NAIC to provide funding in the form of travel expense reimbursement to individuals who are qualified consumer representatives to enable them to participate in NAIC meetings. In order to qualify for such funding, an individual candidate shall have a commitment to representing consumer interests in insurance regulation, represent a non-profit organization, be willing to fully participate in NAIC national meetings and related conference calls, have demonstrated expertise and experience on insurance-related issues addressed by the NAIC, not have obligations or commitments to an industry that conflict with his/her responsibilities to represent consumer interests, and require NAIC funding in order to fully participate in NAIC national meetings and conference calls.

Another option for individuals to participate in the Consumer Liaison Program for those who do not want or need funding is to apply for an unfunded consumer representative position.

The application deadline is Oct. 31, 2013. All applicants are required to complete the application and attach all documents requested. Applicants will be notified in mid-December of 2013 regarding their selection as funded or unfunded consumer representatives for the 2014 calendar year.
