Report: 1 in 4 Taxis, Rideshare Vehicles Have Unfixed Recalls

October 16, 2026

More than one-in-four taxi and rideshare vehicles had at least one unfixed recall, according to an analysis across 16 major U.S. cities.

That rate was higher than the one-in-five vehicles nationwide with an open recall, a CARFAX analysis shows.

In New York City, 38.6% of medallion cabs had an unfixed recall, while 37.5% of taxi and rideshare vehicles had an unfixed recall in Seattle followed by 30.2% in Memphis.

Cities with lower rates included Los Angeles (11%), Boston (9%) and Baltimore (4%)

CARFAX analyzed nearly 438,000 vehicle identification numbers from registered taxi and rideshare. The VINs were provided by state and city officials or obtained through public records requests and open-data portals. The vehicles were checked for open recalls using the Vehicle Research Search Service, a joint venture between CARFAX and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation. Consumers can check vehicles for unfixed recalls at carfax.com/recall.
