Soybean Rust Found in 2 More Ark. Counties

Soybean rust has been found in two more southwest Arkansas counties, researchers have confirmed.

The fungus, which can cause drops in yields of 50 percent or more, has been found in Lafayette and Miller counties, the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service said. Last month, soybean rust was found in Little River and Hempstead counties.

The extension is recommending that all soybeans in extreme southwest Arkansas in their early reproductive stages be sprayed with fungicide. Farmers in other parts of the state are urged to watch their crops closely for any sign of the disease.

Soybeans are Arkansas’ top row crop, with about an estimated 2.8 million acres planted this year.
