Some South Texas Homes Unrepaired a Year After Hurricane Dolly
Hundreds of homes in Cameron County, Texas, remain unrepaired or face teardown nearly one year after Hurricane Dolly made landfall in far South Texas.
July 23 is the first anniversary of Dolly’s landfall, which dumped about 20 inches of rain.
The Valley Morning Star reports the San Benito Housing Authority has launched a $538,000 project to tear down the Kenneth Lake housing project.
The 54-unit complex, built in 1982 on a flood plain, was swamped during Dolly.
Cameron County has applied for a $3 million grant to help more than 100 homeowners rebuild.
Mark Hanna with the Insurance Council of Texas says about 50,000 claims were received across the Rio Grande Valley. Companies paid out about $500 million.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says nearly 39,000 residents shared $34.6 million for housing damage. FEMA paid local governments $65.7 million.
