Jury Awards $900K to University of Texas Scientist
A judge will consider whether to affirm a nearly $1 million jury award to a 66-year-old researcher at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.
Robert Klebe alleged age discrimination and retaliation.
A jury in Austin this month rejected the discrimination claim, but awarded the scientist $900,000.
U.S. District Judge Andrew Austin will schedule arguments on whether the amount should stand. The award could be lowered to $300,000 due to a cap under the Texas Labor Code.
The San Antonio Express-News reports Klebe, who had a stroke in March, remains employed by UTHSC. His lawsuit was brought after Klebe, who was tenured, said his salary was cut and younger scientists were hired at higher pay.
Center spokesman Will Sansom says UTHSC is disappointed with aspects of the decision and will review the case.
