2 Quakes Rattle Northern Faulkner County, Arkansas
Two earthquakes have shaken northern Faulkner County in the vicinity of the communities of Greenbrier and Guy, the latest in a series of small quakes that have drawn the attention of seismologists.
The U.S. Geological Survey earthquake site on the Internet says an earthquake of 3.5 magnitude was recorded at 2:48 p.m. on Mar. 9, followed at 4:17 p.m. by a quake of 2.6 magnitude.
More than 800 earthquakes have been recorded in the area in the past six months – including a 4.7 magnitude quake on Feb. 27 that was the largest earthquake recorded in Arkansas in 35 years.
Injection wells used by companies drilling for natural gas and thought to be connected to the quakes have been temporarily shut down.
