3.3 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded in Central Arkansas

Another in a series of small earthquakes has been recorded in central Arkansas.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports a preliminary magnitude 3.3 quake was recorded at 2:56 p.m. on Mar. 22 about one mile northwest of Greenbrier. The location is about 35 miles north of Little Rock.

No injuries or damage was reported.

There have been more than 1,000 quakes in the area since September – including the largest quake to hit the state in 35 years – a magnitude 4.7 on Feb. 27.

Two natural gas companies have shut down injection wells in the area as researchers study whether the operations are connected to the earthquakes. Oklahoma City-based Chesapeake Energy and Clarita Operating of Little Rock have shut down the wells.
