Police Say Driver Fell Asleep in Texas Bus Crash
Police say a charter bus driver had fallen asleep when the vehicle hit a highway sign, swerved and overturned on Interstate 35 in Central Texas.
San Marcos police on Wednesday released their report on last Friday’s accident that closed northbound I-35 between Austin and San Antonio for several hours.
Cmdr. Penny Dunn told The Associated Press that no charges have been filed and the investigation continues.
Police originally said all 21 people on the bus, operated by Dallas-based Mares Bus Lines Inc., had non-life threatening injuries. The investigative report says the driver, Jesus Basio-Ramirez of Dallas, and 17 passengers were hurt, while three other passengers weren’t injured.
The bus was bound from Laredo to Dallas.
No one answered several calls Wednesday by AP to a number listed for the company.
