Council Vote Ending Houston Red Light Camera Fight

The dispute over Houston’s red light traffic cameras appears to be nearing an end with the city council overwhelmingly agreeing to pay the camera vendor at least $4.8 million if it removes the cameras and drops a lawsuit.

The council outlawed the cameras in August, nine months after voters said turn them off. The cameras are off but remain at 50 city intersections.

Scottsdale, Ariz.-based American Traffic Solutions filed suit, saying it had a contract through 2014. The two sides have been trying to resolve the matter.

A federal judge must green-light the deal.

The Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday the city has about $3 million in red light fines for the settlement and is counting on people who have outstanding tickets to pay the rest within three years.
