Anti-Fraud Units Patrolling Oklahoma Disaster Zones
Oklahoma’s insurance commissioner says anti-fraud investigators are patrolling tornado disaster areas searching for people who are looking to take advantage of storm victims.
Commissioner John Doak says some of the $250 million already paid out in storm claims are often targeted by dishonest people who seek out devastated disaster victims.
Doak says investigators have been patrolling various central Oklahoma disaster zones since after the first tornado outbreak on May 19 killed two people. The next day, an EF5 tornado tore through the city of Moore and left 24 people dead.
Another EF5 tornado and subsequent flooding that started May 31 killed at least 20.
Doak says investigators are also verifying the licenses, permits and insurance of people and companies soliciting business from recovering storm victims.
