Louisiana Scrap Thieves Steal 14,200 Pounds of Steel

January 15, 2014

Authorities arrested a pair of men accused of cruising down the Harvey Canal in a boat and stealing 14,200 pounds of steel from a Louisiana recycling company.

Jefferson Parish deputies say 48-year-old Clyde Perez and 28-year-old Kurt Frickey, both of Westwego, were booked Friday with two counts unauthorized entry of a business and two counts of felony theft.

Officials at the business contacted the sheriff’s office on Dec. 31 to report the theft.

An official with ArcelorMittal Recycling surmised the thieves transported the stolen goods via the Harvey Canal. He showed the deputy drag marks along the canal’s shoreline.

Deputies told The Times-Picayune Perez and Frickey sold the stolen steel to the Westwego recycling yard.

It was unclear whether Perez and Frickey have attorneys.
