Bill Requiring Statewide Annual Elevator Inspections Circulating in Louisiana
Louisiana doesn’t require regular safety inspections of elevators, and while some municipalities have set their own regulations, most parishes are without those rules.
A bid to put Louisiana in line with other states that require annual checkups to make sure elevators are operating properly has started advancing in the Legislature, winning support Wednesday from the Senate Commerce Committee.
Bogalusa Sen. Ben Nevers, a Democrat, is sponsoring the bill to establish the statewide inspection system, which is supported by elevator manufacturers. He calls it a safety measure.
The committee advanced the proposal without objection, though some senators questioned the cost of creating a statewide system and the need for it. Nevers’ bill likely goes next to the Senate budget committee for review.
