Insurance Council of Texas Provides Richland Hills Crime Prevention Signs

The Richland Hills Police Department will soon be placing Secure, Take and Lock signs throughout their city to prevent automobile thefts and burglaries. The crime prevention signs are courtesy of the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) who has distributed the signs to law enforcement agencies all over Texas.

Richland Hills Police Chief Barbara Childress said the signs carry a simple message which works. “When motorists take just a few moments to secure their possessions inside their vehicle, take their keys and lock their car, they have gone a long way toward preventing their vehicle from becoming stolen or burglarized,” said Chief Childress. “The signs also warn would-be criminals to leave the area alone.”

ICT began distributing the crime prevention signs back in 2005 when they were approached by the Austin Police Department (APD) for 100 signs. The signs worked so well that the APD ordered hundreds of the signs that are now located throughout the city.

“Police officers have told us that where ever the signs are placed, auto thefts and burglaries are reduced by 15 to 20 percent,” said Mark Hanna, an ICT spokesman. “That percentage adds up to millions of dollars for Texans whose vehicles were not vandalized or destroyed.”

ICT has distributed more than 2,000 of the crime prevention signs to law enforcement agencies in Texas. In the Dallas/Fort Worth area, ICT has distributed the signs to Garland, Mesquite, Frisco, Richardson, Highland Village, Celina and Grand Prairie Police Departments.
