Former Fla. Policeman Charged with Aiding PIP Fraud
A former detective in the Hialeah Police Department was arrested on charges that he filed several fictitious accident reports to create “patients” for a friends’ medical clinic, according to the Florida Department of Financial Services.
Anthony Meyer, 31, was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correction Center, with bond set at $15,000. Meyer is charged one count each of insurance fraud, grand theft and official misconduct. The charges stem from a joint investigation by the Department of Financial Services, Division of Insurance Fraud; Hialeah Police Department, Internal Affairs Division; and the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, Public Corruption Unit.
Previously arrested was Juan Ramirez, 24, who was listed as an accident victim in one of Meyer’s accident reports. Ramirez is charged with one count each of insurance fraud and grand theft
A Metro-Dade Police Department police service aid told investigators that Meyer asked that a report be placed in the computer system regarding an accident involving his personal car and naming his father and Ramirez as passengers. Meyer allegedly told the PSA that he was doing this to “help out a friend who owns a clinic.”
Express Medical Services Group Inc., located at 4471 N.W. 36th St., Suite 240, Miami, reportedly billed six insurance companies for more than $125,000 based on Meyer’s fictitious accident reports, and collected nearly $123,000 from those billings.
Meyer’s personal vehicle has been seized and impounded for inspection, and search warrants have been executed at Express Medical Services Group, Inc., and at the residence of Gladys Rodriguez, owner of Express Medical Services Group Inc.
Investigators said hundreds of files and documents have been seized as evidence.
