Fla. Insurance Industry Preps for Wilma

Hurricane Wilma, with a barometric pressure of 882 mb, is now the most intense hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin.

After rapid intensification Tuesday night, Wilma is now a potentially catastrophic Category 5 hurricane that is expected to reach the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico by Friday. After that, Wilma is expected to turn toward the southern Florida Peninsula where landfall is probable by the weekend.

“Seven hurricanes have already hit Florida over the past twelve months,” said Sam Miller, executive vice president of the Florida Insurance Council, “if Wilma follows her predicted path, it will make eight and there is still six weeks left in this current hurricane season.”

“The insurance industry continues to bend, but we are prepared to meet the challenges of what Mother Nature is sending our way,” he said.

As part of the preparations, FIC is releasing an updated list of 800 numbers for its member insurance companies. Homeowners are advised to keep a record of the number of their respective insurer as they make preparations for the storm.
