West Virginia Train Accidents in 2007 Dip 30 Percent over 2006

Train derailments and collisions in West Virginia declined 30 percent in 2007 compared to 2006.

Preliminary data from the Federal Railroad Administration shows West Virginia logged nine fewer incidents in 2007 than in the previous year and was one of 34 states that experienced declines.

Nationally, railroads recorded 406 fewer train accidents in 2007, making it the safest year in freight railroad history. That number represents a 13.7 percent reduction over 2006.

Association President Edward R. Hamberger says the record-setting numbers show that investments in safety technology, infrastructure improvements and employee training are paying off.

The number of train accidents across the country has declined for three straight years.
