South Carolina Junkyard Fire Burns 70 Vehicles in Berkeley County
Boom after boom rattled a junkyard in Berkeley County, South Carolina as a fire destroyed 70 old vehicles.
Whitesville Fire Chief Tim Stephenson told The Post and Courier of Charleston the fire started shortly before 10 a.m. on Aug. 11 and was extinguished about 5 p.m.
No one was hurt.
More than 100 firefighters from a dozen fire departments fought the blaze at the junkyard on U.S. Highway 176 near Jedburg.
Stephenson says there were small explosions as the fire spread from one car to another and ignited gas tanks. Tires and windows also exploded.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
