Historic Georgia Building May Be Demolished after Fire
A 154-year-old Georgia mill may be demolished after a weekend fire damaged its building.
The Southern Milling Co. building in east Georgia is one of Augusta’s 10 most endangered historic buildings.
It operated as a flour mill along the Augusta Canal for a century. More recently it was a feed mill that closed in 2002.
Augusta Canal Authority executive director Dayton Sherrouse says the cost to restore the building is too substantial.
Richmond County fire fighters are unsure what caused the fire.
Investigator Lt. Neal Brown says the building’s remains are too hot for firefighters to go inside to determine what sparked the blaze.
