Fire Hazards Close 3 U. of Tennessee Fraternity Houses

Three fraternity houses at the University of Tennessee have been closed following an inspection by the state Fire Marshal’s office, and the few students staying there during the semester break have been sent home.

The houses are Pi Kappa Phi, Lambda Chi Alpha and Sigma Phi Epsilon. Two other houses have passed inspections and 10 remaining houses are still being reviewed.

The Fire Marshal was called in after a fire alarm complaint last Friday. Investigators found an assortment of hazards, including improperly marked exits and failing door hinges. Those will have to be fixed before the houses can reopen.

UT spokeswoman Karen Collins says 30-40 students live in each of the houses. Thirteen of the 15 houses are on UT property but owned by the fraternities.
