Traffic Fatalities in Tennessee Lowest in 45 Years

State officials say preliminary numbers indicate Tennessee could have its lowest number of traffic fatalities since 1963.

Kendall Poole, executive director of the Governor’s Highway Safety Office, said that the number could dip below 1,000. The Department of Safety reports online the current number stands at 971.

Last year, more than 1,200 people died on state highways, and Poole said he believes the office’s programs, including giving out grant money and advertising campaigns, has affected driver behavior.

Chattanooga police Sgt. Al Tallant said local police have increased saturation patrols and public education campaigns designed to slow down speeders and keep drivers’ focus on the road.
