Ex-Kentucky Basketball Coach Gillispie Sues Over Firing
Former Kentucky men’s basketball coach Billy Gillispie is suing the school’s athletics association, seeking $6 million over his firing last spring.
The lawsuit claims breach of contract and fraud. Gillispie was working under a memorandum of understanding but hadn’t signed a formal contract during the two years he coached at Kentucky.
Gillispie contends that under that memorandum of understanding, he should be paid $1.5 million a year for four of the five years left on the deal for being fired without cause.
Gillispie filed the lawsuit in federal court in Dallas on Wednesday. He previously coached at Texas A&M and still has a home in Lexington, Ky. He is not coaching this year.
