Safety Changes Ordered at Massey Mine in West Virginia

The federal Mine Safety and Health Administration has ordered coal producer Massey Energy to make changes at a West Virginia mine where a worker died in October.

MSHA says in a report that 32-year-old apprentice miner Steven Cain was crushed between a railcar and a wall at Massey’s Justice No. 1 underground mine in Boone County. The report says the Richmond, Va.-based Massey was ordered to provide more clearance along rails at the mine and to make sure locomotive drivers communicate directly with miners.

They also must make sure they are in a safe location before moving rail-mounted equipment.

A Massey spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Massey operates mines in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky.
