Kentucky County Attorney Seizes Jail Inmates’ Insurance Proceeds
Officials in western Kentucky have seized settlement money won by jail inmates to pay child support payments.
Hopkins County Attorney Todd P’Pool told The Messenger of Madisonville that his office’s child support unit redirected more than $19,000 to 19 families that were owed payments.
The settlement stems from a class action lawsuit over alleged illegal strip searches at the Hopkins County jail.
The county’s insurance company, Kentucky Association of Counties, settled the lawsuit for $3 million in July 2008.
