Weather Stations Being Added in Kentucky

Three new weather monitoring stations have been added in Kentucky and four more are being installed.

That’s the latest from Kentucky Mesonet, a project by a group of researchers trying to put together a statewide weather monitoring network.

Stuart Foster, director of the Mesonet and the Kentucky Climate Center at Western Kentucky University, said in a statement that the sites will assist National Weather Service meteorologists in producing forecasts and weather warnings.

The statement says 32 Mesonet sites have been installed since the first one at the WKU farm in Warren County became operational in 2007. The sites collect weather and climate data on temperature, precipitation, humidity, solar radiation, wind speed and direction and transmit it to the university’s climate center.

Foster says the goal is to put up 100 weather monitoring sites across the state.
