Insurer to Cover $700K Repair Bill at West Virginia Airport

An official at West Virginia’s Yeager Airport says U.S. Airways’ insurer is going to pay $700,000 to repair runway damage from an aborted takeoff.

Director Rick Atkinson said it should take about eight days to fix the damage. Work includes replacing 240 lightweight concrete blocks that are designed to collapse and slow out-of-control planes before they overrun the runway.

None of the 30 passengers and three crew members aboard the flight to Charlotte, N.C. were injured in the Jan. 19 accident.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
