Kentucky Toughens Food Safety Code
Changes aimed at improving food safety will soon take effect in Kentucky, and officials are getting prepared.
The state Department of Health says it is holding regional training meetings for local health departments statewide to educate food inspectors about changes to the code.
The newly adopted food safety regulations will take effect in May. The regulations adopted changes made in 2005 to the federal food code, putting Kentucky in line with national standards.
Before that, laws governing Kentucky’s food regulations had not been substantially revised since 1976.
Among other improvements, the new code requires that businesses and facilities employ someone who has knowledge of food safety and its relationship to foodborne illness.
