Mississippi School Bus Safety Bill Headed to Governor
The Mississippi House passed the final version of a school safety bill called Nathan’s Law on Saturday, sending it to Governor Haley Barbour.
The House vote was 117-1. Senators passed the bill unanimously on Friday.
The bill, named for Nathan Key, would require motorists to stay at least 10 feet from a stopped school bus. Violators could be fined up to $750 for a first offense. Repeat violators could face a fine and up to a year in prison. Key, a Jones County boy, was killed after getting off a school bus in 2009.
