Kentucky Miner Killed in Collapse in Pike County

Kentucky officials are investigating a collapse at a Pike County coal mine that killed a miner who was working underground.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing says the collapse happened around 11:40 a.m. EDT at McCoy Elkhorn Coal Corp.’s No. 23 mine.

The agency says 33-year-old Farley Sargent was laying track underground when a portion of the wall fell into the corridor. The incident is known as a rib roll. The mine is owned by the James River Coal Company of Richmond, Va.

State officials said it was the second mining-related death in Kentucky this year. The first occurred when a mine foreman was killed in Harlan County in March.
