Mississippi City Officials Decline to Buy Flood Coverage
Sumrall, Miss., officials have decided not to buy flood insurance despite flooding at City Hall during Tropical Storm Isaac on Aug. 30.
Employees had to work out of the police station for more than two months while approximately $20,000 in repairs were made to the floor and walls at City Hall due to water damage.
But, despite that expense, Alderwoman Shirley Barnard tells The Hattiesburg American the Board of Alderman decided not to purchase flood insurance.
Mayor Gerolene Rayborn said the flood insurance cost approximately $1,450 a month.
Rayborn said the new floor covering which was installed in City Hall should prevent the costly water damage that occurred during Isaac.
