10 Killed in Holiday Weekend Accidents in Mississippi
Officials say at least 10 people died and more than two dozen were injured on Mississippi roads over the extended New Year’s holiday.
Only two on the fatalities occurred on roads patrolled by state troopers.
Among the fatalities was 29-year-old Megan L. Watkins of Raymond, whose SUV ran off Mississippi Highway 467 in Hinds County and struck a tree before slamming into a house.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol say Watkins was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt.
As of noon Tuesday, MHP Master Sergeant Johnny Poulos said troopers had issued 5,681 traffic citations and arrested 135 people for DUI.
Poulos says 149 total collisions were investigated throughout the state between Dec. 28 and midnight Dec. 31.
