Auto Fire Leads to Arson Arrest in Georgia
A suspect was arrested yesterday in connection with a fire that destroyed an automobile, according to Georgia’s Insurance and Safety Commissioner Ralph Hudgens.
Lewis J. Vaughn, 53, of McRae, was charged with first degree arson, false reporting of a crime and insurance fraud for allegedly torching his 2006 Chevy Malibu.
The car, valued at $7500, was found burned off of Highway 149 in Telfair County on Feb 3. On Feb 4, Vaughn reported the vehicle stolen and later filed an insurance claims with Auto-Owners Insurance Company, according to Hudgens.
First degree arson is a felony and carries a penalty of one to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $50,000.
