Alabama Mayor Wants to Tow Unlicensed Drivers
Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange wants the city to be able to tow cars involved in accidents if the driver has no license or liability insurance.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports that the Alabama mayor plans to introduce a city ordinance that would give the city new powers. It’s the latest move in a year-long debate over how to encourage drivers to comply with state laws.
The law already allows for civil fines if a driver doesn’t have a license or liability insurance. But officers release the driver after issuing the citation.
Discussion leading up to the mayor’s proposal have divided advocates. On one side are those who say uninsured motorists penalize those with insurance. On the other are those who say additional fines and towing costs burden poor residents.
