Tennessee Family Indicted in Storage Unit Thefts

A Maury County grand jury has returned more than 170 burglary and theft charges against three members of the same family.

Police had arrested the suspects in May on a single count of burglarizing rental storage units in Mount Pleasant, Tennessee.

The Daily Herald in Columbia reported the charges handed up by the grand jury on Thursday charge David Russell Cook, 39; his estranged wife, Brittney Ann Cook, 31; and David Cook’s son, David Jolee Cook, 21, with stealing from storage units across the county.

All three remained in jail Tuesday after 16 units were burglarized in Mount Pleasant and the suspects were arrested on May 13.

After viewing surveillance video from business near the Storage Express, police went to the family’s home and found a number of bulky items on the front lawn, some covered with tarps.

Mount Pleasant Police Chief Tommy Goetz said at the time stolen goods included appliances, furniture, sporting goods and a variety of other items.

“It’s beyond me what they thought the end result of this was going to be,” Goetz said. “Steal all this stuff, then store it out in the front yard. You’re not dealing with rocket scientists here.”

The investigation implicated the suspects in a number of other break-ins in Maury County.

District Attorney General Mike Bottoms said the Cooks targeted storage units and stole from them.

“They broke into a lot of them, got caught and have to pay the penalty,” Bottoms said.

Jail records did not show whether they had attorneys.
