Mississippi Lawmakers Discuss Flood Insurance

August 23, 2013

Calling pending flood insurance increases “drastic and draconian,” U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo of Gulfport met with state and local leaders to discuss ways to stem the tide of rising insurance rates that are due to kick in as early as October.

Palazzo, Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney and FEMA Associate Administrator David Miller met Wednesday with city and county leaders from across the coast along with business and community leaders.

Moss Point Mayor Billy Broomfield says his city will pass a resolution asking Congress to do what’s necessary to keep insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program affordable.

The Mississippi Press reports Palazzo says the purpose of Wednesday’s conference was to find a short term solution and “educate, inform and unite.” He says it’s likely the first of many.
