2 Facades Damaged by Fire Collapse in Georgetown

October 1, 2013

Officials in Georgetown, S.C., say the fronts of two buildings heavily damaged in a fire in the city’s business district collapsed over the weekend.

The fire that swept through the waterfront dining and business district last Wednesday destroyed seven buildings. The facade of one building was cleared away last week and then two other facades collapsed early Sunday.

City Administrator Chris Carter says the facades collapsed mostly on themselves although some of the rubble fell in the street. He says officials think crews may have to remove the remaining facades because they are unstable.

Carter says there is interest in keeping the old bricks to use in rebuilding.
