Florida Payroll Firm Misidentified, Dropped from UPMC Data Breach Suit

May 15, 2014

A University of Pittsburgh Medical Center employee has dropped a Florida payroll firm from her lawsuit on behalf of workers affected by a data breach.

The attorney for employee Alice Patrick tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Ultimate Software Group Inc., of Weston, Florida, was “misidentified” as the hospital network’s payroll processor and has been dropped from the lawsuit. The suit against UPMC will continue, but move from federal to Allegheny County court.

The hospital has confirmed the data breach may have compromised the personal information of 27,000 of its 62,000 employees — including nearly 800 who’ve had bogus tax returns filed using their personal information.

Patrick’s lawsuit is unusual because she’s not seeking monetary damages, but rather wants the hospital to pay for identity theft protection and credit restoration and counseling going forward.
