North Carolina Road Crews Working on Hurricane Arthur Repairs
Motorists using the southern portion of N.C. Highway 12 next week will encounter N.C. Department of Transportation crews doing work in the wake of Hurricane Arthur.
A statement from the department said crews will close one lane on the Bonner Bridge during daylight hours beginning Monday and lasting through Thursday. Officials say the closure is necessary to allow crews to safely take some samples as part of the department’s ongoing monitoring of the bridge.
Workers on Friday began removing large amounts of marsh grass that was washed up onto the right of way during the storm surge.
Crews also will be rebuilding dunes along N.C. 12 between the south ferry dock and the Pony Pens on Ocracoke Island. Weather permitting, the work will be continue for two to three weeks.
As of Thursday, two lanes of traffic are now open on the northern end of Pea Island at the temporary bridge. A permanent bridge is under construction there, and an on-site detour is being built to limit disruption to traffic during the construction. When the on-site detour is paved, the section damaged by Hurricane Arthur will also be repaved. That work will likely take place in the next couple of weeks.
