South Carolina County Student Athletes May Have to Pay to Play
It appears Beaufort County School District athletes may have to pay to play in the school year that begins in August 2015.
The Beaufort Gazette reports that the South Carolina county school district is considering passing the cost of athletic insurance on to students.
The district recently negotiated an almost $300,000 insurance contract. If the costs of a similar contract were passed on next year, it would mean each of the more than 4,000 athletes in the district would have to pay about $70 a year.
District officials say they are looking for cheaper options and for ways to subsidize what it charges students.
