Georgia City Agrees to Settle Stun Gun Death Suit for $1M

Attorneys say an Atlanta-area city has agreed to pay $1 million to the family of a man who died after police officers used stun guns on him.

Chris Stewart, a lawyer for the family of Gregory Towns Jr., said Thursday the city of East Point agreed to pay the maximum amount allowed by its insurance policy. Acting city attorney Brad Bowman says the maximum is $1 million.

The lawsuit filed in August accused two East Point police officers of using their stun guns as many as 13 times on Towns while he was handcuffed.

Former police Sgt. Marcus Eberhart resigned, and former Cpl. Howard Weems was fired. Weems has appealed his dismissal, and that appeal is pending.

A spokeswoman says the Fulton County District Attorney’s office is investigating the case.
