Insurance Commissioner Joins Industry Volunteers to Help Feed Sacramento Homeless
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner will join the ranks with thousands of insurance industry volunteers throughout California to provide support to community nonprofit agencies during Volunteer Week, October 18-25, 2008.
Commissioner Poizner will join with insurance industry employees on Wednesday, Oct. 22, as they cook and serve hot meals to the women and children of St. John’s Shelter in Sacramento. St. John’s Shelter for Women and Children is Sacramento’s largest homeless shelter addressing the special needs of women and children. Its mission is to move women from a point of crisis to self-sufficiency during their 90-day stay.
Since 1998, the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation has hosted Volunteer Week — the largest ongoing volunteer initiative within the insurance industry. In each participating region across the state, thousands of insurance employees donate upwards of 12,000 service hours in a single week each year. The Industry Foundation solicits insurance employees to form teams, including family members, friends and industry partners; then matches them with charitable agencies to provide three or more hours of service during a concentrated week of volunteer service. By combining the time and talents of the industry, Volunteer Week participants make a significant impact across the state and inspire collaborative goodwill across the industry.
The Industry Foundation is funded and directed by insurance industry professionals representing a spectrum of the industry: reinsurers, insurance agents and brokers, property & casualty, health & life, and related advertising, public relations, law and accounting firms, computer businesses and other partners working closely with the insurance industry.
