Worker Killed in Accident at Nevada Mine
Newmont Mining Corp. says a veteran employee was killed in an accident at a northern Nevada gold mine.
The company says 57-year-old Steve Halverson of Spring Creek, Nev., died when a flatbed pickup truck backed over him at the North Lantern Pit in Eureka County, about 25 miles northwest of Carlin.
Halverson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Newmont’s Nevada operation’s executive Tom Kerr says Halverson was a drill operator and had worked for the Denver-based mining company for 22 years.
Officials say mining operations in the area where the accident happened have been suspended while state and federal safety officers investigate.
