Utah Woman Pleads Guilty of Insurance Fraud

July 28, 2009

On June 6, 2009 Helen C. Rodriguez pled guilty to one count of felony insurance fraud and was ordered to repay $35,000 to GEICO Insurance Co., the Utah Insurance Department reported.

According to the DOI, in November 2006 Rodriguez was involved in an auto accident in Davis County. Rodriguez filed a claim with GEICO and forwarded her bills from her visits to a clinic in Mexico and resulting in a settlement of $35,000 from GEICO toward the end of 2006.

In 2008 GEICO received anonymous information that Rodriguez had used a false name at the time of the accident and that she did not visit a clinic for her injuries. GEICO notified the Utah Insurance Fraud Division, who investigated the claims. It found that the clinic did not exist and that she had created the medical records herself.

On April 7, 2009 the Attorney General’s Office filed second degree felony insurance fraud charges against Rodriguez in Davis County, Second Judicial District. The charges also included one count each of second degree felony identity theft, third degree felony identity fraud crime, and third degree felony forgery. Rodriguez was arrested by Insurance Fraud Division investigators on April 7, 2009 and booked into the Davis County Jail.
