Northern California Man Arrested for Insurance Fraud
Roseville, Calif., resident Anthony Molina, 24, has been arraigned in Placer County Superior Court on four felony counts of insurance fraud including one count of filing a false police report, the California Department of Insurance has announced. Molina faces a possible five years in state prison and fines of up to $200,000.
According to CDI, on July 26, 2010, Molina drove his 2008 Toyota Camry to the area of Blue Canyon Road just north of Interstate 80 in Placer County. Molina’s girlfriend followed in her vehicle. Once they reached Blue Canyon Road, Molina pushed his Camry over the bank and returned to Molina’s residence in the girlfriend’s vehicle.
On July 27, 2010, CDI said Molina contacted the Roseville Police Department and reported his Camry had been stolen from outside his residence. Later that day, Molina contacted his insurance company and reported his Camry had been stolen from outside his residence. A search warrant for cell phone records confirmed a call was made from Molina’s cell phone to his girlfriend’s cell phone between the 26th and 27th and that the call was placed in the area of Blue Canyon.
On July 28, 2010, officers from the California Highway Patrol, Gold Run Office, located Molina’s Camry over a bank in the area of Blue Canyon Road north of Interstate 80. The vehicle was later determined to be a total loss. During the claims process, Molina completed a notarized Vehicle Theft Questionnaire document and made other material misrepresentations to conceal the fact that he had dumped the vehicle and that it had not been stolen as reported, CDI said. The girlfriend confirmed Molina’s involvement in the scheme. However, Molina denied any involvement to detectives when interviewed. The investigation revealed Molina likely dumped the car to get out of his car payment, which was more than $400 per month.
